Application deadline
2010-08-01
Job start date
2010-09-01

The position is located within the division of Nuclear Engineering at the Department of Applied Physics, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg. The department provides a strong, international, and dynamic research environment.
Job description

The PhD project is concentrated on the study of stability and transport in magnetically confined plasmas with a special emphasis given to impurity transport driven by microinstabilities and neutral particle effects in advanced scenarios. The aim is to develop improved theoretical models within this area, to be able to explain experimentally observed phenomena in existing magnetic confinement devices and to make predictions on the implications for the design of future ones. The activity is strongly integrated in the EURATOM-Fusion program and the research work is carried out in close international collaboration with scientists from Europe and USA.

As a Ph.D. student you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties at the department, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.

Required qualifications

We are looking for a PhD student with a Masters degree in Physics with good knowledge in electromagnetics, mathematical physics, and numerical simulations. Excellent knowledge of written as well as spoken English is also a requirement. Knowledge in plasma physics is considered as an advantage. You are expected to work relatively independently, have ability to plan and organize your work, and be able to communicate your scientific results, both orally and in writing.

Chalmers is an equal opportunity employer. In order to improve the gender balance at the department, we welcome in particular applications from female candidates.
